Mezhyhirska, 32

History of the pogrom

According to currently available information, the pogrom took place on October 4 or 5 (old style).

In the morning, at about 6 o'clock, six armed men entered the courtyard of house No. 32 on Mezhyhirskaya Street, two of whom were in officer uniform, two in soldier uniform, and one in civilian clothes. They broke into the house by breaking down the door. One of these men, with a white armband on his sleeve, entered the Akofmans' apartment, demanding 20,000 rubles. Since Akofman did not have that kind of money with him, his wife Khaya-Reiza Akofman ran to the neighbors to borrow money, but at that time Isaac Akofman was killed by a rifle shot to the temple. The soldier who killed his husband also tried to kill his eldest daughter, Rachel, but missed. In the next room, another daughter, sick with typhus, lay. The robber also shot there, but missed.

The attackers then robbed the apartments of the entire building and its residents, taking money, jewelry, and other valuables. After a while, they let a huge crowd of "mobs" in, which started looting, and destroying the remaining property.
